I uninstalled the graphics drivers and installed the latest nVidia drivers, but this did not solve the problem. I tried this again and again with various driver versions with no effect. In complete frustration I disconnected the displayport cable to check for dust and tried reconnecting it.

Immediately the monitor jumped to its native resolution, problem solved. Unplugging the display port and reconnecting seems to force a reset in the detection of the monitor. Windows 10 has attempted to re-adjust my monitor to x again today after installing updates. Once again I was able to correct by unplugging and re-plugging in the display port cable. This problem does not happen with my other computer win8 , or my work laptop win7. This is NOT a solution, this is happening to our users everyday.
